My novel The Embroidered Book takes place during and before the French Revolution, and as one might expect, there are some scenes of violence and death. But there are also some difficult moments drawn from the history of its characters that readers might not necessarily expect. This isn’t intended to be a comprehensive content warning list; I think readers are better suited to identify and discuss what may be difficult for other readers. But I do want to give a heads-up that this book includes some discussion of arranged marriage, partner violence, child illness and death, miscarriage, endemic disease, racism, colonialism, imperialism, accusations of pedophilia, and mutilation of corpses. Some of these are brief references and I’ve tried to deal with them in a way that seemed responsible to me, but knowing that readers come to a work with their own histories.
