Leaving my day job and other news

I’ve been at the Ottawa Citizen for more than 11 years; the last couple, as editorial pages editor. I love that newsroom and have been proud to have my name on the masthead. But it’s time for me to move on.

After next week, I’ll be a freelancer, making my living from some mix of non-fiction, fiction and editing. That’s the plan, anyway! I’m looking forward to having more time to write fiction. I have so many projects I want to work on, and I’ll finally have some time.

In other news, my story “The Semaphore Society” was posted in audio and text at Escape Pod today. It was originally published in Crossed Genres in 2014. It’s one of my favourite stories: it’s about a teenage girl who communicates with only her eyes and how technology can be a force for good.

Over at SF Signal, I participated in a Mind Meld the other day about a book that inspired me.
